Hope this is OK here as Nelson passed away February 28 at 91 years of age and was not a member of this fine forum, but perhaps he did earn an honorary membership on a small island named IWO JIMA. We need to remember these greatest generation heroes around our campfires.
Printed in Brownwoodnews.com on a happier occasion:
"VFW Post 3278 honored Cpl. Nelson Turnbow by awarding him the Iwo Jima Veteran’s Commemorative Medal on Friday, August 19, 2011, recognizing his moral courage for defending the Untied States.

On December 7, 1941, naval and air forces of Imperial Japan attacked the USN Pacific Fleet Base at Pearl Harbor, HI. Three years later, on February 19, 1945 a young Marine named Cpl. Nelson Turnbow was deployed to help invade Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima was one of the most heavily defended Japanese islands in the Central Pacific. By March 16th the Japanese forces had been destroyed in one of the hallmark battles in Marine Corps history. On September 2, 1945 Japan surrendered.

As Turnbow recognized his fellow veterans and thanked them for their service he stated “I am not a hero, but I have seen many heroes. I don’t like to be called a hero because it takes away from those who did things above duty and a number of them did.”

Thank you Kaz for the story of Cpl, Turnbow. Where was the phrase coined--uncommon valor was a common virtue? Believe it was Nimitz who said it after Iwo Jima's capture.

It was, indeed, Admiral Nimitz, and I believe he said it on the day the battle ended...

Thanks all, the SEC/NAV at the time said that battle/flag raising guaranteed a United States Marine Corps for the next 500 years. We will see in these troubled budget times. Regards

God bless that Devil Dawg. My great uncle fought the japanese in the jungle and it changed him forever what he seen there my great aunt said. That was when men were men and it was victory or the world would perish in evil tyranny. Thank God for men like Corporal Turnbow.
