The local gun club where I live has canceled all rimfire competition due to a shortage of ammunition. Why is there still a shortage of rimfire ammunition? I'm still sitting on a couple hundred rounds. I was thinking about going out doing some plinking, but maybe I will hold off.

Hate to hear of this, but we could see it coming...

I mentioned to several people earlier this spring how I'd hate to be the person tasked with laying in cases (5000 rd.) of .22LR ammo for summer competition this year, ie: Boy Scouts, 4H or more adult pursuits.

I whaled on a swinging bowling pin yesterday whilst firing a 50 round drum magazine rapid fire (.22) and wondered if there is less *fun* being had during these times.

Pretty sure we could all use some more *fun* in our lives.

eta:

* After reading my post, I notice I used the word *hate* a couple times...so unlike me to be a hater!

Have my reserve in place but have shot very little RF due to the shortage. Picked up a couple 325 bricks and a couple 100 rd trays recently. Will be holding onto them until more can be found.

Only shot enough .22 rimfire this summer to make sure my rifles were sighted in for hunting season.  I have a fair supply, but I don't want to burn through it and have another spurt of panic buying leave me empty handed.
...and my daughter likes to shoot my .22 Ruger auto pistol, so I don't want to have to deprive her of that pleasure when we go to the range.

I've heard the major ammo makers, have set aside and are providing 22rf for youth groups.

The only rimfire ammo I've been able to find all summer was match ammo. I imagine that at $8-$17 a box of 50 that folks looking for plinkers aren't too likely to bite. These prices have no risen since the shortage.

I saw Eley Club for $8.89 and Eley Match for $16.69 last Thursday. Unless you've got a target grade .22 it's not worth the investment but these shoot like a house afire in the right gun.

I shot a 25 yd match with these in my NRA 19 once that was IIRC 243/250 with 14X/25. Got beat by a 248/250 with 17X by an old man with a Winchester 52 sporting a Unertl scope darn near as long as the barrel. He was shooting the same ELEY ammo. At that time it was about 1/2 price of what it is now. RD

I went through probably 30 rounds yesterday, didn't want to burn through my supply. Just needed to have a little fun in the sun with guns.

My FIL is down in (an unnamed city ) in Arizona. Big Five and Wally World get their .22LR ammo in on (unnamed day) of the week every week. A few guys get up and arrive at the store in time for the opening every delivery day. The buy up all the .22LR in the first 15 minutes of the store being open.
Last Thursday FIL was 2nd in line and managed to buy a 525 bulk pack. He missed a 1000rd bucket by being second in line.

FIL said the .22LR is gone by the 4th or 5th customer then no more until the next weeks delivery day.

Until our fellow shooters stop hoarding ammo I'm afraid until you learn the system you're SOL in LHC.

Darn told the day and city :lol:

Went to some of the gun stores I like to frequent today in my wife's home town.....they all had .22 rimfire, but I didn't check on prices since I didn't need any right now.
....but it was a much improved situation from last January!

Was going through ammo boxes last week and came across some 50-round boxes of Remington 22LR. $1.99 a box. Those were the days...

There is no shortage, just an over abundance of guys buying it and then reselling it 3x retail or as Bass Pro is doing $7 a box of 50

Bass Pro here is getting $2.49/50 for Rem. Thunderbolts.limit 2 boxes or Federal 325 pack for $20, limit 1 box.

It's spotty. You have to be there at the right time.

This weekend I "discovered" an unopened box of Eley .22 in a closed ammo can. It has been in that can for 15, maybe 16, years. It was corroded badly - white fuzzy bullets...looked like a science project, or what I found i the back of refrigerator.

Maybe not such a good idea to buy up all the .22 ammo.

In the same can was a brick on PMC Target .22. I got several "Fail to Fires" from the box I took to the range. That could be a PMC issue, but they didn't look like as bad as the Eleys.
