Jungler sent me some info on a new "fun" contest they have "Down Under" called a Fly Shoot.
Object is to hit any part of the "fly" in the center of the Bull at 500 meters. Sounds like a hoot. They even hand out shoulder patches.

See attached. You should be able to save the image and resize to fit 8.5 X 11 paper.

That's a mighty small target at 500 meters! I'd be happy to see it at 200 or 300....

Reminds me of an old episode of the Beverly Hillbillies. Mr. Drysdale pulls up and Jed and Jethro are shooting rifles offhand at the front gate. Mr. Drysdale asks what they're shooting at and Jed says flies. Jethro put some molasses on the wall to attract the flies and they're shooting at them with lever guns and iron sights.

As a kid my cousin and I did our own version of it. He lived on a diary farm so flies were a constant. We took a big heavy cardboard box and set it out in the yard. Flies would land on it and we'd shoot them with our BB guns. Wouldn't be anything but a red smear around the cardboard when you hit one and the cardboard box allowed us to reclaim the BB's and shoot them again. We were just a bit closer than 500 meters though more like 500 millimeters at best.

Mrs Olyeller has been complaining about Cicada Killers (great big hornets) flying around our front porch. I drug out my 357 with snake loads and been shooting them with those, kinda like miniature dove hunting.

What ghrit said.

I created the target by scanning the original targets.com pdf and saving as a jpeg file, then pasting the fly jpeg onto it to create this one. Save image as a jpeg or gif file and edit with Paint or some similar picture program.

We had lots of flies where I grew up. We used to put honey on a piece of paper and shoot the flies with our ground hog rifles at 200 yds, if it was a bit windy we would drop that to 100. Leaves a bloody spot when you hit one. Lots of fun.

A pellet rifle at about 20 yards against those 1 1/2" long August Grasshoppers was my introduction to offhand shooting. Shot a lot of them on dust covered field roads. Darn near big enough to filet but we left them for the meadowlarks. RD :123:

Yeah, that's what jungler sent me, but I made my own target up. That Australian fly just didn't resemble the ones around here.

I've seen a few places that have the flies painted in the urinals for targets. A lot less mess in those bathrooms.

There might have been a day when I was younger but I don't think I could compete at 500 meters anymore. :digging:

Aussie Mick, I was looking at a couple of other links on there. One listed calibers used in a competition. There was a 7mm Jacko and an 8mm Jacko listed. Never heard of them, can't see any internet info on them. What exactly are they? RD
