I'm headed to Kansas this April to work on the next phase of my Grand slam/Royal slam.  My issue is that the area I'm hunting has a mix of Rio Grand and Rio/Eastern Hybred birds.  I was told that the pure Rio will have matching buff and rump tipped feathers and that the feathers ont the Hybred would be light buff on the tail tips and golden on the rump feathers.

Are there any other differences that anyone can share with me.

I have no clue, but harvest records and so on tend to indicate the further west you go the less likely of encountering a hybrid.  with apologies to the web site I took this from, and paraphrasing,  The ranges overlap in the middle 60% of Kansas.  To kill a Rio, hunt far west and for an Eastern, hunt far east.

If you are in the middle of Kansas, it does seem as though the very tip of the tail feathers on the Eastern are bronze/gold/shiny brown in color.  The Rio'stail feather tips are more of a dirty white/gray color.

Just personally, I hope you whack many.  If I was close enough to tell rump feathers, I'd be squeeezing off a round for sure.
