What do you think the ONE MOST important thing is in getting accuracy from a rifle???

PICK FROM:

A.   rifle action

B.   Rifle barrel

C.   Ammunition/reloads

D.   Bullet choice

E.  Optics choice

Forget saying if the scope is junk, then no accuracy...could say that about anyone of above.

Assume other options are normal grade!

That's really a toughie. I'm kind of a holistic guy myself. Can we say ALL OF THE ABOVE? No? Then I guess I'd have to pass. :)

I also cannot pick one of those, it is a team-play of all things you mentioned.
You forgot the stock and its fitting to the system which can ruin everything when not executed perfect.

Bear:

That is a tough one.  Each one of those things affect accuracy.   In my personal shooting experience, I would say both B and D together.

The truth of the matter is this:

You can have the highest quality rifle, the best trigger, finely tuned ammo for that gun, but if the shooter doesn't do their part not much else matters.

I think they all matter. Action? No caparison between a traditional lever and a modern bolt action.

Comparing like to like, I'd say barrel and ammunition.

I read and interpret different.
You say getting accuracy, so i assume accuracy from different styles of guns.
I choose C Ammunition makes the difference.

For instance 30-30 lever model 94 shot jugs at 200-250 yards with ammo i had got in 1980's would not hit car door with with same brand and weight ammo from 1999.
Reloads made it work like the old ammo.

Savage 10fp bolt in .308 accu trigger and fat barrel store ammo would not shoot any groups under 4"
This was just good old cheap winchester ammo.
Hand loaded ammo in my 30-30 would out shoot the savage .308
Hand loads made the difference.

Hmm, I'm a literal person so I take the question as removing the shooter from the equation which renders most of the above responses irrelevant to the question . However, I also don't think the list of choices is all inclusive, but if I'm starting from scratch I'm starting with a bolt gun so I'd vote for the action as the basis for an accurate rifle.

According to OP:
"Assume other options are normal grade!"

I take "normal" to mean acceptable or average quality.
On that basis, I would have to say D. Bullet choice; you have to match the bullet to all the other pieces of the puzzle.

IE; a 70gr 224 bullet won't shoot worth spit in a 1-14 twist 222Rem, but a 52gr Match King held the world record BR group outta that cartridge for years.

Ozark Ed hit the nail squarely on the head. Marksmanship, or lack of it, is often the overiding factor in rifle accuracy. (Same with pistols, etc. as well.) Whenever I visit a public shooting range I'm often appalled by the shooting performances to be witnessed there. A while back I overheard an exchange between a a couple of shooters at public range, one of whom was shooting an AR and bragging about its 200 yard accuracy, while the other guy was arguing that the target's distance wasn't 200 yards but only 100 yards. Their argument was fun to listen to because the target was actually at only 50 yards. Yet, these are the folks who get on the net and describe their sub-MOA rifles. Which is why I NEVER shoot at public ranges. Go figure.

Barrel is by far the most important. But they all play a part in a truly accurate rifle.

Savageshooter wind in my book. got it right.
I think we all play with reloads, because it is too expensive to take 40 barrel to the range to work up the best combo!

I've only had two rifles that I have loaded for, but they are quite different. The first was a Ruger American 22" 308. With some factory ammo, it shot great, others, not so much. The second is my Savage 10 FCP. Shoots ANYTHING 1.5 MOA or better. Handloads make it capable of less than 0.75" groups consistently. Assuming we are disregarding carbon based lifeforms in this discussion, the barrel will be the greatest contributor to accuracy, IMHO. Or, the barreled action, if you prefer. I still think if you put a burned out barrel in a stiller action, you get something less than what you would need to win out at Creedmoor.

thought someone would focus on not only the barrel but on some barrel parts...the rifling and the crown are pretty important.

Have to agree here. If the person behind all this hardware can't shoot, it's a mute point. However, if any of one item above is out of wack with the rest, you'll find yourself chasing your tail trying to figure out why your hitting everything but the little black dot in the middle of the target.

It is a good question for debate. Might even be a good one for a poll. The results would prove to be interesting.
