I am still in the process of building a .280 Ackley . . . . yeah yeah I know its been a long project, but you know how it is - life and work and family get in the way sometimes.

Donor is a CZ 550 American in 30'06 (I am selling the Mauser 98 that was originally going to be the donor).

I will use "as is" for a little while - as I am still kicking myself for selling my other '06 in the same combination.

So whats your "pet loads"?

All the usual caveats apply - start 10% low and work up if you are going to use any of the data provided here.

My 280AI has to be the easiest rifle to load for I've ever seen. Anything within reason works. It gets stupid boring shooting golf balls at 100yds. :lol:

Here are four loads I like a lot. All shoot under 5/8" at 100yds. Just recently loaded the MagPro load and haven't shot it much; just enough to see it's working too.

Caliber       Bullet        Bullet Wt    Powder           Powder chrg     Case  Avg Vel    Primer
280REM AI
Sierra GK         140     Alliant 4000-MR        61.0         Nosler  3234     WIN LRM
280REM AI Sierra GK         160     Alliant 4000-MR        56.0         Nosler  2827     WIN LRM
280REM AI Hornady ELD-X   162     Alliant 4000-MR        55.5         Nosler   2860     WIN LRM
280REM AI Hornady ELD-X   162      MagPro                64.0         Nosler  3045     WIN LRM

I have 280AI build before SAAMI Spec with Kreiger barrel and SAAMI Spec 280AI with Lilja barrel.

Nosler you can get their data on-line, has loading data for 280AI and new Hornady manual #10 also has data for 280AI and both use Nosler brass.

Sierra manual has data for 280AI which is not SAAMI Spec  If you have old Nosler manual they have data for 280AI, think it started around #4/5 which is like Sierra.

There was enough data for the non SAAMI spec  from Sierra/Nolser, so wasn't like loading for my 35 WhelenAI or 243AI.

I would use Nosler data and not pushing Nolser forum but guys over there have QL and be happy to do that for you on any powder/bullet for 280AI.

As mention pretty easy load for  and haven't found much it doesn't like.  I stay mostly with 160gr up to 180gr VLD and been shooting the 162gr ELD-X and going to try 175gr.

So how much difference do you actually see between the two?

olyeller,
I don't think one will see much if any differences between the two.As long as the length and twist are the same !!I have a few AI's mine were all done by Parker himself. started to get expensive sending out the brass and having Fred ( RCBS ) make up the dies !!!!:thumbs:

There is little difference in the case.  I don't shoot same bullets/powder so couldn't give you honest answer.
