I need to drop about 10-15 pounds. My height is 6 feet and weight is 195 pounds.I recently started taking some prescription cholesterol medicine because my cholesterol level is through the roof.I`ve been walking a few miles a day, walked 6 and a half today with the kid, and trying to eat right but exercise is the ticket to getting my cholesterol in check.I really just want to lose a little weight for me.
Anybody have a safe diet to lose 10-15 pounds that is sensible?I eat a lot of beef and meat in general so I know this is gonna be tough...

Hi there TG

I just hate diets.... it just doesnt work for me. I try and be more active and and just cut down on the amount of normal food  i eat.

that works for me, and when i do it like that , im less prone to pick up weight again...

With your cholestrol problem you are probably on a diet already? just try and srick to it and keep on walking. Still one of the best low impactexercises around, and whats best is you can enjoy it, like you, with the kids!

Hope you get it working for you.

All the best

Short term diets don't help, you must change eating patterns. I'm 6'3" and sadly, 250 right now. On the shady side of 50, my metabolism is slowing, and i cannot eat like i used to without packing on the pounds. Eating out is the biggest challange to me...if I buy it, I want to eat  it. Most restaraunt portions are bigger than needed. I'm starting to leave food on my plate or take it home.

eat less, and excercise more.

Yeah Charley..I hear ya man. When I was a full time soldier I stayed at about 178 pounds of pure muscle.I lifted for 2 hours everyday after work and ate right. Now my metabolism like yours is working against me.I stay active like pouring concrete till 6 this evening but its not enough.I`ve started eating rabbit food"salad" which I never messed with at the eat out place.Straight into the steak and taters was I.No more for a while though,Im gonna lose that 10 pounds or die trying...

gene - a couple of ideas -

for one, you don't have to get diabetes to go on a diet for diabetes, or at least adopt a few eating patterns. i don't have diabetes, and i sure don't want to get it, so i've tried hard to cut out all pop and sugary crap from my diet. also, believe it or not, peas and corn are considered more starch than vegetables! i didn't know this until it was told to me. other startchy foods such as potates and rice, as well as the sugary crap mentioned above, and lastly, breads that are NOT whole grain, are ALL very high in carbohydrates. one thing that struck home for me was when i read somewhere that stockgrowers stick a steer or a hog in a feedlot and feed him nothing but CARBS for 30 days to fatten him up for the slaughter!

when it comes to stuff to drink, there's water of course, and skim milk, which tastes better these days than it used to, and 100% juices, NOT juice drinks, pop, or anything like that!

i'm not telling you to jump on the atkins wagon, because i am convinced that it is just a fad. as posted above, it's not about fads, but about lifestyle changes.

another thing to keep in mind is that deer and other venison is considered to be lean enough so that you can eat twice or three times as much of it as beef or other not-so-lean meat. in other words, if you want to cut calories, and you figure that you can eat only 4 ounces of beef, you can eat 8 or 12 ounces of venison and get the same benefit as if you were eating that dinky little portion of no-fat hamburger patty!

also, if you don't eat breakfast, do! a bowl of whole-grain cereal or a couple slices of whole grain toast will do good for ya. i never ate breakfast for years due to work, and usually ate no lunch, either. the result is that i would get home starved and end  up having 2 meals and a snack before i went to bed, all after normal dinner times, which doesn't do any good either.

having said all that, excercise is what will keep you fit, and it looks like you are on the right track there. my dad was in the army 35 years ago, and apparently learned to walk there, because he can go all day long up and down coulees (arroyos) long after my kids, and especially me, have sat down and started bawling!

anyway, these are a couple of things i have learned. you if you make certain substitutions, you can eat just as much as you always did, just get better use out of it.

now, i am just starting to try to get things in shape, but this advice is what i was given by a little dietician who probably weighed a hundred pounds herself, so she must know what she is talking about!

TG

TasunkaWitko and Charley have  some valid points.  Fad diets are just that Lifestyle changes are the way to take weight off and keep it off.  Avoiding sugar in the form of pop, candy and artifical fruit drinks is a excellent way to start, not only that but you should save money in doing just that small thing.

A diabetic diet is extremely healthy diet as it has a very balanced combination of fiber, sugar, and carbs.  You may want to talk to your doctor and see if they agree to letting you try it for a week or so.  Next no snacks after 8pm. water only. I used to snack in front of the puter which was generally well after 8. I now bring a huge glass or two of water with me when I sit and stare at the screen.

Breakfast is a very important part of the morning. If you are trying to cut your cholesterol go buy a carton of oatmeal and eat a bowl every morning it really does knock those points down.  To benefit the most from the oatmeal tho you need to buy the regular not the sugar and cinnamon or apple etc. just plain ole oatmeal.

Excersice is the most important part of any diet or lifestyle change and the bowflex is a great part of it. As you start to build muscle you will knock some weight off. The best form of excersice is cardio.  That is your walking assuming you stay at a fast pace and keep the ole heart rate up.  I bought a used nordic track and use that.

Lastly when you do eat out no more super sizing anything. Furthermore remember the three B's.  Bake, Broil or BBQ.  no sauce on the BBQ tho since the main ingredents are sugar and carmel coloring.

Hope this helps a little.  Take care Be safe Poacher.

  ALRIGHT TG!!!!

Today as I was thinking on this I realized that I had missed somthing here.  Not that  this is always the case but more often than not  when a person has high cholest.  they usually have either high blood pressure (Hypertension) or are border line.

High BP does alot more damage than a person would think. Besides making the heart pump faster and harder it also causes arterial damage because of the excessive pressure on the veinous walls. This can lead to an eventual ballooning of the artery or vein than then a rupture. These are usually fatal.

High BP also causes kidney damage because it creates more creatine which is then transported to your kidneys and can cause eventual shutdown... (read Dialaysis) yeah its prob mispelled but I'm tired and don't feel like looking it up.

The good news on this is that by exercising you can lower the BP which helps the heart and veins.  The kidneys are an easier fix. Lots and lots of water. It will flush the kidneys and lower the creatine levels.  You'll be going to the bathroom alot but hey thats not so bad.  One last thing and I know you prob will not like it; Beer.... gone. even the light is enough to add weight to you.

    Take care Be safe Poacher.

poacher - this dietician says that it really is about eating fewer calories, and set me up on a 2k/day calorie diet, and i am doing my best to follow it, but if for some reason i am unable to, then i simply don't eat. when i have time, i'll run down the details of the diet itself, but it is actually pretty liberal, in my mind.

i've also cut out all pop and other big sugar sources and am basically drinking either water, skim milk or some 100% juice.

thanks to both you and gene for the congratulations, but it really is a drp in the bucket. i imagine that all i've really done at the moment is simply drop a lot of extra water in my system.

as far as exercise, i need to be getting out and walking!!! but it is 8 degrees this morning.....

Hey Gene I have been doing diets for over 12 years and nothing really worked until I quit the taters, bread and pasta I dropped 65 pounds in 3 months and that was a year ago and Im still there, man its the carbs ya gotta cut back on. I am a meat eater all the way and could not survive on a veggie diet. Since I cant do the excercise stuff and needed to lose some weight this did it for me! I hope it helps. Jimmy
