As I was lying in bed pondering the problems of the world, I rapidly
realized that I don't really give a rat's hiney. It's the tortoise life for
me!

1. If walking is good for your health, the postman would be immortal.

2. A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water, and is fat.

3. A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 8 years.

4. A tortoise doesn't run and does nothing, yet it lives for 450 years.

And you tell me to exercise?? I don't think so.

I like the Chinese "doctor's" advice---watch your figure--round is a figure. There is a list of such that is funny.

I've long said that this exercise craze will do nothing more than send the healthiest corpses ever to the grave!

:sofa:

As a side note, without a doubt, most people I know with serious health problems got them from attempting to "be active" in a sport.  My brothers father-in-law for example, poor guy was cajoled into "healthful" jogging by his doctor. On his last morning jog he was taken out of this life by a soccer-mom with a cell phone in a minivan at the ripe old age of 58!

It's a dangerous world as is, why would you ask for an extra helping?

I went thru a running phase about 35 years ago. Started to suffer severe back and sciatic pain. Dr. Gave me pain killers, no mention of behavior changes. Continued to hurt, he refered me to an orthopedic surgeon. He checked me out, and told me surgery was my only option. By now I hurt so bad I was desperate. Didn't want surgery, went to a chiropractor. He checked me out, asked about my work and play habits, and exercise regimen. Told him I ran about 6 days a week. he explained I had an unstable lower back, and, in his words, I "could swim, walk, ride a bike, BUT FOR GOD'S SAKE DON'T RUN"! Turned out the pounding on my lower back from the impact of running was the culprit.
Still don't run...

Then there are those who lead an absolutely healthy life, eating only what's really good for you, not drinking alcohol, exercising, etc, etc.
Won't they be disappointed when they find out they're dying from nothing??

Know what you mean, had the same troubles until I found a good Rye Whiskey that drinks best at room temperature. Feel the burn!

Sounds familiar.  I have 3 compressed disks and my doctor asked me the same question.  I told him I mostly walk, ride bike and swim.  He asked if I jogged and I said no.  He said, "good, don't.  You're doing everything right, just keep it up".  Same reason as yours.  Evidently walking is the best thing you can do for your back according to him.

It's a no brainer. The 300 Spartans jogged to Thermopylae and we know how that ended.

I grew up surfing, skindiving and sailing. Moved to the mainland and took up running. That lasted for 2 years but it started hurting my knees and so I started riding a bicycle 6 to 8 miles a day 5 days a week. That lasted for almost 15 years till I got prostrate CA. then I took up rollerblading with my kids. I was bladeing 6 to 8 miles 6 days a week for at least 6 years then my heart went south. Then I took up smoking and drinking and felt much better but the damn docs made me quit smoking. I'm 68 years old and still have a cigar once a week with some whiskey be it Scotch, Bourbon, or Irish Whiskey. Never tried to seriously exercise again other than trail walks with my M1 carbine. Life is good and no regrets or worries about the future. I now have learned to cook and enjoy GOOD food and relax with the things I enjoy enjoy; my family, especially the grand-kids, handloading and shooting what more can a man ask for?

I don't think it is the running. It is the surface you run on. Most run or roads made for cars. You ankles, knees, and spine are not pneumatic tires!

The high school track teams run on the road past my house daily (they do 10 miles a day). While I like to watch the giggles and flapping ponytails of the girls team, I have to believe they will be walking with a cane when they hit 45!

Still believe hydrogenated oils and fats are one of the biggest causes of poor health.
My GP ate fat pork, whole milk, cow butter, biscuits and gravy all but the last 3 years. When he moved to town, he only made it 2 years before a stroke got him down.
He was 84.
His little brother, who ate the same stuff, but a lot more of it, he outweighed GP by 50 lbs, only made it to 99.
I really have a hard time believing some of the B.S. the dr.s and health pros put out.

Most of us have been around long enough to know that life is terminal. In 50 years I'd say most here wont be posting.
Enjoy life as it is meant to be. :)

The family doctor that delivered me and my two siblings looked like Burl Ives, smoked mainline Camels (complete with brown stained fingers) practiced medicine until his mid-seventies, lived until his late eighties.
