hi guys ( erm and girls )

yes the new chatroom is open , as noted it still has a few bugs but ..it's fairly easy to use and user friendly ...for the most part , here's what i found - you can get there but may have a problem typing etc until you choose an avaatar ( dont ask me why i dont know ) that in it's self is fairly easy and you'll only have to do it once and then it will remember you . to do so go to the avaatar tab , it's the 4th tab from the left above the typing box ( or if you prefer the 8th from the right ) to choose an avaatar , the plain one will work or you can upload one of your choice , there is a size limitation but i have no idea what that size is , i used the one i use on the forum but that isnt required , if your chosen file is too large reduce it in a foto editing program until it works [shrugz] be sure to save it as "save as " so as not to shrink your original file  once you have your avaatar set it seems you're free to join in , so having typed all that ... click the blue tab with the red ribbon on it to get in and the who's in chat window will tell you who's in there - see ya in chat :troll:

questions ? problems ? please post them here so we can help if needed

( ummm Mr. Word feel free to edit this as/if needed ...me and my umm typing skills you know ... :P )

fryboy, We tried the video chat tonight but were unable to get it to connect to others cameras. If you need any help with any of the forum, my wife said she'd be glad to help. She is a DBA and has a Masters in Computer Engineering. I used to be pretty good with phb but it's been a few years.

umm many thanks amigo but ... ( knew that was coming didnt ya ? lolz ) i'm not really the tech guy per say ,perhaps rd or wildbill will chime in here ....

yeah we knew the glitch when we opened it up , pretty sure it's also tied to the audio aspect of it , i'm thinking the foto share glitch may be tied to the same problem but that's only a thought, the avaatar one we found after we opened ,it's an easy work around for the most part
i'm not real converse in phb either , a wee bit better in ye olde irc chat and unlike irc this one wont let me change my nick ( used to have alot of fun with that  :P )
the very main thing is we finally got a chat room back !

The chat room has a video/audio feature but as we understand it we would need to have a dedicated server to have enough bandwidth to handle the traffic. RD

Video chat is not on my get r done want list -- file sharing seems to be needed more. We can share some things now but within bounderies. I know we will have limits and rules for file sharing but a lot of stuff is in unrecognized formats now and in fact most of my stuff has been converted to PDF for storage. I do have a lot still in original DOC, DOCX or WPG form so I can post it. Besides who wants to see my cranky old hind end anyway... I mean im just now getting to where I understand the tablet I got for Christmas LOL, please don't throw something else at me for a few more months. This is just my opinion, that and $1.25 will get you coffee at some places -- local café anyways.

Right now we pay a monthly server fee. We'd have to check into the cost for a dedicated sever. I can't imagine that it would be cheap. RD

I for another one am not a big fan of the video or audio chat. Due to mostly the location of the computer the sound can be heard in the upstairs. Also a lot of the old farts on this forum aren't worth looking at:rolleyes: So save the ban width, for file sharing.

Add to that problems and compromised computer system from bad guys and kiddies just having fun. I no longer have a live camera nor would I get one for chat. Since I have the sound turned down when the wifey goes to bed early. It isn't that big of a draw in the chat room.

The file sharing of a limited number and types of file exts. jpgs, pdfs and the more common ones like on the forum would better serve the membership here. Not to mention the added expense of server ban width.

To get the use up of the chat room I think a bigger thing is moving it up in the list of forums available. Like in olden times with the newspapers when people did read anything below the fold.

It is too far down the list, I know that it is in about the same place as the old one. It should be in the first section above the wall of shame. So more people are exposed to the availability of it.

Even with the main heading of the forum groups collapsed( which I just found this morning) if you don't have any interest in the forums. which closes up the screen space.

I seem to forget about the hunting camp most visits even when I have posts in it! And I just found the library forum this morning:cool:

I have used the chat room and meet some good people in real time, I can say that in all the time I have been on the net. I really have learned more for this forum site than any of the others I partake in.

I look forward to continuing to use the chat room without the video/audio components.

Save the ban width for other stuff rather than vid's/audio. And the cost of it.

The avatar glitch isn't a big deal. I picked one to see if it needed to be resized and it was uploaded in a flash. So don't let that stop you from joining chat.

look forward to meeting more in the chat room :troll::thumbs::troll:

Glen, Thanks for your input. We can certainly think about your suggestions.

As for forum placement and use I honestly never think about it as I, almost exclusively, use the "Recent" view of the site. It shows you, in order of posting, every topic that's been added to since your last visit. Much faster to see where the action is. RD

I didn't realise the problem was band width, which makes sense. The chat room will work just fine without it. Thanks for the hard work and dedication. If any of the admins ever need help figuring some of this out, my wife said she'd be happy to try and help. Just PM me and I'll send you my number so you can speak to each other and figure out the glitch.

If you are in the chat room and have no avatar you can type all you want but we can't see you. There is a row of buttons near the bottom of the page. To the right of the pencil button there is a small white head and shoulders shot. Pick that button and use one of the cartoonish looking avatars until you load one of your own. RD

Video chat = as much as I am interested in that for showing different reloading tricks or methods, I will avoid it as I am to ugly to be seen. That and the fact that I normally work at the computer in my "Engineering Attire" as my son calls it: a FCSA T-shirt and my Fruit-of-the-Loom Whitey-Tighties. Normally ok until I stand up to get something else, or the wife walks into the room after taking a shower. It's been interesting on other video chat sites like Facebook.
