An excerpt forwarded to me:

What do you do when you have no choice but to use deadly force to protect your family? I think that the best way to explain what we did is to use an outline.

Here is a list of things you need to do now to prepare for this:
· Have a plan on how you want the family to respond in case of such an event.

We had a "safe" room where the wife and kids would go while I provided cover but no plan on her being home alone.

· Look up, and interview a hand full of lawyers. Find one you are comfortable with and establish a report in the off chance you might need legal counsel.

We did not do this. I did have a name and contact information but had not gotten around to calling him yet.

· Be prepared to lose whatever weapon you use to police custody for a very long time.

Even though my wife was cleared of all charges, my gun will be in custody for at least two years according to the police department. The point here is to have another weapon because you will not feel safe without one.

· Check with your insurance company for the bio-hazard clean-up.

I got lucky here because I never thought of it before. Actually I don’t know for sure if any would not cover for something but it never hurts to ask.

· Take care of your friends! It is good to have them in times of trouble.

If you think it’s hard to find help moving, try getting out of your house in 10 hours when there is blood on the floor and nothing is packed.

· Find a safe location that you can stay at for at least a week.

Short term priories:
· Make sure your family is safe first! Nothing else matters at this point.
· Get out of the area, the house, the city, and do not talk to the press.

My wife was told by our lawyer she needed to give a statement to the press. He made all the arrangements, screened all her answers, and made sure her face was hidden.

· Get supplies to last for a week (cloths, meds, kid’s favorite toys…)

· Find a place for household items.

I had the entire house into a storage unit within 12 hours of the first shot.

· Contact your Lawyer.

· Set up counseling, even if you don’t need it immediately after.
· Contact your homeowner’s insurance company and get the cleanup started and the house secured.

Long term goals:
· Is your house in an area you can go back to? If not then make sure you can afford to pay a mortgage and still have enough money left over to live somewhere else.

Mine is not. My neighbors support our actions but the other small time gang members do not.

· If possible get out of the area.

I moved 30 miles away and am actively looking to move out of the state. There is no way to put a price on peace of mind.

Feel free to add to this or scrutinize our actions so that more people can learn what to do. I am proud of the way we handled ourselves during this trying time, but that doesn’t mean there is not a better way to do so.

Good information, I think it would help to know what State this situation occurred in. All are not the same. Now if this happened on the Hill Top of Tacoma that's one thing, I may want out of that location for sure, there's no way one family can take on all the gang bangers. I would not run but one must think of family first. Here in Arizona things are quite different than Washington State.

Thanks for this info. I forwarded it on to my kids and a few friends. This is stuff you don't think about. Being prepared is more than running and gunning.

You should plan to move no matter where you are, if you pop a bad guy in your house.

Besides his gang and family threats, you will still want to move.

If you have kids, get to a new schol district or the "your mother is a murderer" will haunt them. Houses where someone was killed, even a sucide become know in the school and neighborhood as "the murder house"..

Then there's the other side. What to do if you shoot someone just for the hell of it.

Run off
Throw the gun in a river
deny everything

Make one wonder who the laws are written for?

I saw the list in relation to a recent OKC shooting...husband was at work (Tinker AFB), wife asleep, and thought an earthquake had occured. Called husband, he told her "no", then she heard noise in the LR of the home. Picked up a weapon, investigated, and shot and killed one of a pair of intruders.

Pretty sure this was the husband's posting a couple days later.

If this info is accurate then now the family is no longer anonymous......city, hubbys place of work, incident detail.....

The husband posted several things on a shooting board, it was linked frm a Texas board I read sometimes.

His situation is a bit different from many...he's a renter, for one thing. Easier to move, even considering breaking a lease. His neighborhood was kinda marginal...fair amount of gang activity.

Me? I guess I'm stubborn, but no SOB that breaks into my house is going to make me move. Loose my defense gun for some time for evidence? I've got others. Don't TALK to the PRESS! He said several things, not smart, IMO.

The man from OKC posted his story on XDTalk. I thought it was odd at the time. I don't think I would say anything about a shooting on the web, justified or not.

Make a statement to the press?....Why? I'd have fired my lawyer for suggesting such a stupid idea! You owe the press NOTHING! They would throw you to the wolves for ratings alone!

They are no better than the fool you shot!

Wondering if the Lawyer worked for one of the news stations too and got a check for it?

Understand.. Justified or not you will be cashing in your retirement, 401K and just about everything else that has value to defend yourself if you have a zealous prosecution D.A. Not to mention the civil side that comes later. Remember this::: It's beyond a reasonable doubt for criminal prosecution but it only has to be 51% to get a verdict against you in a civil court of law.

You don't have to believe me just look at the Zimmerman case.

Take care Be safe Poacher

Understood Poacher......we all want to believe it never comes down to that point, of having to use deadly force and yet we cannot let the bad guys win....I think it circles back to us getting our Country back with the ideals laid out for us by the Founding Fathers who recognized our Divine Right to Self Defense and laid out the ground work to see that we always retained that Right.

Zimmerman presents a strong case, for not calling 911.

Yep, criminal justice system requires "beyond a reasonable doubt", civil, the standard is "the preponderance of the evidence"...the 51% spoken of. That "evidence" can be statements you gave while still under tremendous stress from the event. STFU!

Thanks for the thread and info. We live in the "country"(used to be)so will not be leaving because of such. It is a tragedy to end a life-unless forced into it but if so then "dead men tell no tales". Wound someone and face years of litigation.
