SKami:

The top link in my post has a link in the story to the company that did the mowing. I think they are in Madison, might be worth checking into. I have about 30 acres here that could use it to get rid of cedar trees in the pasture but no one is close enough to make it cost effective. Guess I'll just have to win the lotto

Please let us know what you end up doing.......

Well, I just CANT hold it any more. You should call Poacher,
Him & that long gun will make short work of those stumps??
Calm down Poach, I just couldn't resist. LMAO.
Seriously, I would do the dozer, prep & plant, even if I had to broadcast some wildflower seed all over just to help with erosion in the beginning.

I own a tree farm, what you need is a stump plow or stump cutting plow. It is a front attachment for a dozer, usually a D-9 or so in size. It looks something like a huge two sided turning plow, pointed at the front tip and the width of the dozer at the back but has a horizontal blade on each side. The dozer runs it about 6 inches or so below the ground and it cuts the stumps off below the ground. The weight of the big dozer keeps it from turning to the side as it slices the stumps off. When done you push the stumps into a pile with a root rake on a tractor and burn them. Come back with a disk and level the ground then plant it. The cost here in FL is about 2,000 for 10 acres after it is timbered. A big dozer just runs through the stumps like they are not there at all. They spend more time unloading and loading.

Believe it or not, that is a small plow in the picture. The one for sale, by the side of the road in Paxton, FL where our farm is located, is over 6' tall and built just like that. Of course the bigger the plow the bigger the machine to push it and the bigger the stump it will cut.

We used a company called the "Brush Monster" to clear underbrush/unwanted trees from the woods behind our church. They did a fine job.
