Now as a disabled shooter, if I was to compete in rifle competition under NRA rules if I read everything right With a doctors note I can do all of my shooting from my mechanical rest. Everyone else would have to shoot from all of the different positions, but I would take all of my shots from the seated position behind my mechanical rest. In my opinion, that would give me an unfair advantage. What do you guys think. This is one thing that holds me back some from doing competitive shooting. I think I would feel better competing with other disabled shooters. But I'm just curious if you guys would feel the same way as I do.

Bill

I see your point Bill, but I can only count two disabled shooters in my whole club of 700

How many other disabled shooters are at your matches??

I have not been to any local competition. I would imagine anywhere there are not very many disabled competitors. I do know of an organization that does a shoot for disabled shooters. But that is not in my local vicinity. I really should just join my local club here and see how it goes.

Bill, Anybody that would begrudge you shooting at all, let alone competing, is a bonehead and deserves to have his ass kicked either on the targets or otherwise. Go, compete, have fun and take prisoners if you have to. RD

I've done a little competitive shooting and would have no qualms about your shooting from a rest. I'd thank you for having the stones to come out and compete.

Go ahead and compete. The only thing that rest will do for you is a steadier hold and maybe shot to shot repeatability. It will not help your eyes. It will not read and interpret the wind. It will not dial on corrections for you. It certainly will not hold off when the wind changes and you are running out of time. I would be happy to compete with you anytime and sit around and talk about it afterwards.

Bill,
I have competed against several disabled shooters. I have never seen one that you could take for granted. If they have the grit to get through every day life they are a competitor. In our club, we shot rifle and handgun silhouette plus pins, plates and IPSC. The guy that I got tied up with over and over again in rifle silhouette was a para in a wheel chair, a hand roller was all he used. When strapped in, just to keep him in the chair, his upper body strength was awesome and he is today a very good shot to boot. If you came to win you had to get by Hank and you best bring your lunch. Shot handgun silhouette against a Marine with one arm, no legs, he was hell on wheels standing with a Contender, sitting in his chair. He hunted with a Contender in an AT chair in TN. Would shoot a deer and drag it out of the woods with a rope and his chair.
You want to shoot, get your stuff together, make sure you are within the rules and go for it.
Ed

Since the creation of ADA,(Americans with Disabilities Act) I think most people are ok with those accommodations made for the disabled. You're not doing anything you're not deserving of.

I certainly don't hold that against anyone. I'm fortunate that I don't have those disabling conditions and would not trade good health for any perceived slight advantage of a disabling condition.

Go compete. If anyone bitches, ask if they want trade places.

Bill after seeing the groups they turn in us disabled people who have to use a bench have no advantage over them. They are good enough to make us work twice as hard. I want to complete but body won't let me. I build and test but never get to a match.go have fun that is what it all about they will welcome and help you have a great day.
