Thanks Mortis, those are good "back pack" tools but for long term back woods events one needs a real axe, shovel, saw, etc. I have a dbl bit axe, two bow saws, two cross cuts, shovels, and a few other "pioneering" tools that are man powered. To cheat a bit I have chain saws also. Hopefully we will not have to resort to rebuilding in the wilderness but one can never tell what may come down the pike in life.

Course the Blog is about getting out of Dodge PDQ and the major tools are not practical unless you have them cached someplace.

Absolutely right Mortis. Hatchets are dangerous tools and I would recommend a small folding saw instead. Have a flex saw that works fairly well, very light and compact. That tri fold shovel is a winner and the plastic one does well for "cat holes". In hard ground you can fab a sharp stick to loosen the ground so the little shovel can do it's work.
