I hope no one objects, but I feel I must contribute something to this forum besides political commentary, boobs, and smartarsed remarks.

I do not profess to be an expert in Survival, but I've had way more hours training and experimentation then I often care to think on.  So..maybe I can contribute something that others might have missed.  Altho it is a good chance that I'll cover what most already know.  But often looked at from a different direction can make sense to someone.

Fire Starting.

Having spent alot of time on the desert, I can tell you that a fire a night to keep warm is more often needed then not.

What to carry is always a personal option.  What a person needs to consider is that bulk is as bad as weight.

Magnesium fire starters are nice as long as the kindling is dry or supplemented.  I have carried many items over the years, but I've sorta settled on FireSticks.  Also the fire starters you can buy for a fire place works nicely too.... burns long enough to also heat a cup of coffee.

In the picture above, you will notice 2 different firestarters.  Both work in any weather condition.  Rain or shine.  And the picture below was taken in the rain.  I sent some of the Fire Sticks (on the right) to a friend in Scotland.  He is a former mamber of 2nd Para and a part-time Ghillie.  He says they worked in rain, shine and snow.  And he has asked for more.

The matches are Strike Anywhere.  I have no use in the field for matches that require a specific surface to strike on.  And of course, the waterproof matchbox.  I located these are our local Ace Hardware.  Kitchen matches were $.97 per box and the pocket matches were the same for 10 boxes of 32 matches each.

The flask is a Coleman, purchased at WalMart for approximately $7.00.  It is for Kerosene or Lamp Oil.  Nice seal so very little risk of leakage.  Kerosene or Lamp Oil does not evaporate quickly, thus reducing an explosive ignition when hit with a match.

I did see mentioned lighter fluid as a liquid starter mentioned in a previous thread.  That also works real good, but I have seen those plastic caps get knocked loose, leaking lighter fluid all over your gear.

Will leave this as is for now.  Will expand more as I move thru other aspects of Survival kits.

The strike anywhere matches (blue head) are actually hard to find up here in Minnesota. I don't know why.

Just from habit, but I would damn sure mark the flask as to contents. You never know when an idiot might find it and take a good long pull from it. PITA that we always need to think of our liability in a case like that, rather than figuring they got what they deserved.

Wolfkill...........

The trend over the past dozen or so years has been too move into those areas of child safety.  I'm certain that if a person could do the research, they'd find thousands of cases where fatal fires were started by children 'playing' with matches due to the ease of lighting.  Take away the source, you eliminate the danger.

Kinda sounds like gun control does it not?

I suggest you check the hardware and/or feed stores.  As I said, I found these in the local Ace Hardware store.  Have yet to find them in the local grocery stores.

Is there a difference between the blue head, and the red and white head?  Red and white heads are pretty common up here in this part of Minnesota.

Bill....

Can't say for certain, but the red/white tipped matches are Strike On Box down here.  They will not lite except against the surface provided.  I've tried lighting them on ultra-fine sandpaper but all it does is eat the tips off.  Maybe I haven't found the right combination yet.

Anyone with an idea on how to lite them with a substitute surface, please post the information.   Inquiring minds need to know!!

The reason you can't find the matches much anymore is that the contents in the match heads are what meth heads need for a meth cook, so they were buying up all the matches and scraping the compound off and then cooking their meth with it, so to help stop it, the matches have pretty much removed from shelves.

If you find dollar bills that have red thumb print smudges on them, you have found a bill that some cooker was counting with the phosphorus dust on his fingers as they have two hobbies, cooking and counting cash.

Strike anywhere were being used to make fun things that could be misused also, I remember that was a reason for them disapearing. Just the head of it was strong enough to make small weak explosives in quantity and can be used for impact ignition of other things.
My nephew took a bunch of the heads, carefully stuffed a tennis ball with them, he would throw them hard and it would ignite when it hit something.
