Haven't heard much about it on the news, but a couple of days ago a Navy Blue Angel pilot died when his jet crashed while taking off. Same day, a Thunderbird pilot had to eject after performing a fly over at the U.S.A.F. Academy.

The Blue Angle pilot stayed with his aircraft till the end, making sure it crashed in an unpopulated area.

I can give no more respect, to sacrifice his own life to save those on the ground. the term hero is greatly over-used IMHO, but it applies to this pilot.

What I read on military.com was that it appears the aircraft suffered engine failure. Upon this happening, the plane was steered away from housing.

That's the way I understood the story. Engine failure on takeoff, and he rode it down to avoid the housing buildup that happens around all military bases.

Marine Captain as I remember. Went out doing it right. May he rest forever in Peace in the arms of the Lord.
