Willie Rogers, Passed away in St. Petersburg, FL at the age of 101. He was a ground based logistics man with the Famous Tuskegee Airmen in WWII.

From the linked article:

Rogers was drafted into the army in 1942 and was part of the 100th Air Engineer Squad. Rogers also served with the Red Tail Angels.

In 2007, President George W. Bush awarded Rogers with the Congressional Gold Medal.

Although they faced discrimination in a segregated military, the Tuskegee Airmen were among World War II’s most respected fighter squadrons. The Airmen’s success during World War II -- not losing a single bomber to enemy fire in more than 200 combat missions -- is a record unmatched by any other fighter group.

Tuskegee Airmen were a MILESTONE in what makes this Country GREAT.

Sadly I'd never heard of them till the movie came out.

I had the privilege of meeting one of the pilots, years ago how, he and his wife came in to an optical shop that I was managing. In Tigard OR he was quit the gentlemen, put up with me asking question as a amateur historic and air plane buff. He was in town for a reunion at the Evergreen air field in Vancouver WA. Nice man.
