I found some UHDW ( slippery white nylon plastic ) for the boat here in town at Windsor plywood. 4X8 sheet 1/2" thick perfect, $305 a sheet. That sounds nuts but it is a good price and no freight . I have found some on the net for around the same price but there is $300 freight , more if it is a residential address and a per cut price.

They will cut it for me and sell me a half sheet for $160 , cut it in to 6, 4" wide 8 foot strips for the bottom of the cats.

But I need to put the sheet metal on first, the plastic will hold on the steel.
I found a peace of 20 gauge 4X10 galvanized at steel etcetera here ,and they will cut it into 2, 2x10 pieces, for $78, I'm also getting some more Aluminum and make another brace between the cats half way up.
I'm wondering if I spray , "Under coating" like we used to put on cars and trucks, on the Aluminum cats first then cover it with the sheet and plastic, will it help stop the Aluminum to steel electrolysis ?
I'm mixing the heck out of the steel/aluminum stuff.
It will be the most contact area , I don't plan on ever running in salt water as in ocean but alkali is salt too.

If you only putting the boat in water when being used I really would not worry about electrolysis unless you around power supply like at a marina with power cords going to all the boats. Can always get a shield and hang on side of boat or if you feel you need one put the zinks on the outboard and hand one on the hull, its cheap insurance.. I change my zinks every so often depending on the wear they take. Some years are worst then others and depending on who is next to your boat.

On my boat the Sacrificial Zinc Anode is 20 years old. It shows some pock marks (which only increase if surface area and efficiency). Like your watercraft D, my boat is primarily in freshwater and raised clear of the water in it lift when not in use.

Galvanize is a coating and will mitigate any electrolysis. If any it will be where the bolt holes expose the bare steel. Stainless bolt would also reduce the impact, but outrageously expensive. I buy stainless hardware every year when the narine is closing for winter, 35% off everything! Zinc coated bolts (Home Depot) are cheap (not marine quality) and in your application might be all you need.

I flipped the Waterbug hull bottom side up to work on the hulls.
I added some more bridging and cross support.








Then I took some 20 gauge cold roll and bent it to shape and added a small trim tab to the bottom and back of the hulls.
The cold roll is to help stop sharp ice/rocks and it slides better then Aluminum. The lip is to "Brake" the water like a drip edge on your roof.











I'll add three ,four inch by 1/2 inch hdpe plastic to each cat to make it slide even better .




I'll paint the aluminum with a rubberized paint before permanently attaching the sheet. Then I plan to coat the cold roll with "Gaiter Glide" before the plastic to make it slid as easy as I can.
One day I'll put a motor on this thing...D

Well I got all the metals prepped for paint.
Painted the underside of the sheet and the Aluminum part under the sheet with rubber truck undercoating.
Then I painted 3 layers of Gaiter glide, slick paint .
Next is the HDPE.

I have no idea what to expect.
What I HOPE for Is around 15/20 MPH on water and at least that much on Ice.
All I hope for on dry ground it that it moves.
Fuel is not in the equation, I'll put on a 12/15 gal tank as see how far it'll go...

"Far" is probably not the right word.  Think run time.  I got it stuck in my mind that you are going with an old veedub engine and I'm too lazy to go back and look.  So now, a thought experiment:  Lets say we got 25 mpg and a roughly 250 mile range out of a 10 gallon tank at say 50 mph with our experimental bug.  Let's also say that 50 mph is it's best (most economical) cruising speed.  Looks like 5 hours before you have to break out the oars?

I have no clue what the most economic rpm will be for that engine, and that will heavily influence run time.  The prop will also have a huge effect. 

I actually envy you the experiments, living with you vicariously.  Good fun.

ghrit- got it right with the run-time / fuel burn ( usuable fuel ) allow for wash in tank. Either way sure sounds like a fun project and hell good luck with the WATERBUG!:thumbs::thumbs:

Ruffian, I think the design criteria for this machine is to carry two hunters with decoys less than a mile upstream in a shallow rocky river, crossing some sand bars and, possible needing to go a few hundred yards on frozen soil/ice.

This is a winter vehicle, so after a Bug warm up, I suspect D will only run less than an hour in and out.

Fuel usage will not be a problem. Speed, power and draft will be. Oh yes, safety!


It is an interesting, creative build.

Haha Nope if you where closer when I got the kinks worked You would be more then welcome for a real ride.
I think your right on "run time" but you have to allow for air slippage , a lot of blow and not so much go.
The motor will have to run between 1800 rpm to engage the clutch and 3100 rpm , max on the prop.
