Ed, except that the 30-30 was never a BP cartridge, at least to my knowledge.

I just hope the 6.5 Crudmoor dies a fiery painful death. It was the answer to the question nobody asked and everyone that shoots it thinks it's the second coming of the Lord.

Charley wrote: Interesting question. I shoot a lot of "obsolete" cartridges, they come and go. What will always stay, in terms of rifle cartridges? My list, in no particular order.

1.30/06
2..308 Win
3..223 Rem
4..270 Win
5.7mm Rem Mag
6..30/30 Win

YMMV.

While I am hoping a few others stick around for a bit. I have to agree with Charley on this one (for the most part). I have always been a 308 fan but after working with the 7/08 it is quickly becoming a lead cartridge for me. I also REALLY like the 6.5 Creedmoor with its ballistics vs recoil. The only change I would make is probably the 30/30 being replaced by the Win. 243.

List I believe has some of the most potential:
1. 270 Win
2. 6.5 Creedmoor
3. Rem 7mm/08
4. 7mm Rem Mag
5. 22-250
6. 223

The reason I like this list is with the BC's that are coming out now there isn't a lot of reason to keep a lot of the older "Big Block Chevy's" around, some of these newer or redesigned cartridges are just giving a lot of the older cartridges a run for their money.

I know the second list wont replace the first list since there are just so many of those rifles out there and they are proven to get the job done time and time again.

30/06
.308 win
.243 win
.338 win mag ( most common elk round around here)
.303 British (so many around)
.375 H&H (at least I hope it will)
My standby is . 270 win and I use it for all game around here and find it better than ever these days but don't see it lasting...just a hunch

Good Lordy, what a cool and awesome topic. We're going to be talking about EVERYTHING that works!
Here is my list.. my,.. thoughts I guess.
1) 30-06. Why? 'cuz it IS.. (not my fave) but sure does work!
2) .308 Why? 'cuz it IS.. (not my fave) again, this gem sure does work!
3) .223 Why? IMHO the M-16 platform drove , and will continue to drive the platform and the round to be around for a while. (p.s., I was in the 82nd ABN DIV, so
I am familiar with this round and this platform).
4) .270 Why? sure did get a lot of good write ups.
5) .243 this round will be here for a while.

New kids on the block??
#1 6.5 Creedmoor I'll bet the farm on this one.. Is it the best? Nope. But it's marketed correctly, can get in a premium bolt action tack driver as well as an AR rifle. Does almost everything that my top 5 can do.

My personal "most over looked" round.
#1 The 284 Winchester. Poor O'l gal. We missed the boat on that one.

One good thing is several cartridges use much the same bullets. 6.5 x 55, 6.5 Creedmor, 6.5 Grendel, .260 Remington, 6.5 x 47 all can share bullets. Not all of the weights, but many of them.

That will keep them all afloat longer than one would think.
6mm of any flavor uses .243 bullets.

Look at how long .303 British has hung on, and .30-06. The Mosin round is found everywhere, same with the AK round.

It's hard to guess, really, and hit it exactly.

Personally I like the 280 Remington, I have a model 70 Winchester featherweight and a Ruger Hawkeye chambered in this caliber. I also have a Winchester model 94 AE lever gun in .307 Winchester that has taken quite a few deer all one shot kills using 170 gr Partitions.. William

My first three choices were driven my Military use and available brass:
30-06
.223
.308
The nest three are what I feel with outlast the others
.270
30-30
.375 H&H
The last because years from now the available of other large calibers will die off because there will be no game available to shoot and this one caliber will come to the fore!
There will be many others but the availability of both ammo and game will make hunters second to collectors and target shooters, last two driven by reloaders in a field that will be much more highly regulated than today!
Just saying!!

Well firstly it's highly unlikely that I'll be around in 100 years so there's a bit of a care factor involved. However, barring all sorts of unforseen circumstances, and with just a touch of bias;
222Rem (better than a 223)plus I have one
243W does it all.
270W as above
7x57M we are currently seeing a huge revival of this round
308W because.

Well, just to throw my 2 cents in

1. 30-06
2. 30-30
3. .308
4. .243
5. .300 WinMag
6. .270

No particular order, just my best guess as to the current popularity and longevity that I've seen in my lifetime.
