I found HB while searching for information on an old Lyman 45
I just received it yesterday and started taking it apart to give it good cleaning. I'm understanding the pressure nut off of the Lyman 450 will work. I'm waiting on the correct die and punch to arrive. Any advise on this old tool?

I'm planning to use wheel weights for my casting. Any views on this?

Also casting with Lee 452-230-2R mould and plan on sizing to .452 and using the "45" sizer instead of tumble lube. Views on this?

Will be shooting in an ATI 1911

Wow! My 1st post is a long one! Thanks to all.

Hello Cajun1953,
Greetings and welcome from New York. What is your question ? Have several Lyman 45's lube machines with the heater plates too. Will need H & I dies are you Gas checking also ? Lyman makes super lube machine, never have had a problem with them all. You are going to need lot's of wheel weights casting for the 230 gr :cowboy: So you decided to join this gang of Bandits, That's super, now get a good seat and jump in when ready and meet some of them. Enjoy your stay with us. Just keep them clean and use a heater plate makes a difference when sizing / lubing ..

Thanks. I have one little gas station that does some tire work and he is giving me his weights. I need to check around and see if other places will give or sell me some cheap.
Any suggestions on lead sources?

welcome to the forum from NY. I have puchased ingots off of E-bay a few times. lead is getting tough to get at service stations with all the new laws on lead weights.

Not gas checking yet. Loading jacketed .223 right now. I think I'll load plain cast on the .45

Welcome to the board. The Lyman 45 will do fine, but be sure and use a softer lube in it, unless, as mentioned, you get a heating plate for it. .452 will be right for the 45 ACP, and the Lee mold drops a nice bullet. Biggest problem with wheel weights now is the presence of more and more zinc wheel weights, getting easier and easier for one or two to slip through your sorting, and ruin a pot of alloy.

I got a recycle center near me that sells material they buy, i got four pure lead "bricks" for .70 cents a pound, nice and clean lead, they had wheel wieghts and lead pipe, and even a 55 gal drum full of alum cases, i was thinking of buying some alum cases, cause i should get one reload out of them, for when i want to shoot but not have to pick up brass.

welcome Cajun , as for your ? on lead, if you have a plumbing supply store near you, more of a contractors store , not a lowes or home depot, you can go in there and they stock 5 lb ingots of pure lead used to lead old plumbing connections. it may not be cheap but it will be very good and get you going . I am lucky on that front as I work constr. and have quite a few plumber friends that donate to the cause. so !!!! find a plumber, make a friend . its all good.

I was lucky- after Sandy hit the North East and the marinas did one big clean up ( old sailboats that were just falling apart and hanging out for years on end along the shore lines and sand bars ) was getting the lead from the keels these were the old, old wooden ones. Lucked out on them and yes the lead have a few lbs ( thousands ) now. Sinkers up to 10 lb balls for the shop, plus a few casts for the pistols.

Welcome to the board. I like tumble lube on tumble lube style bullets.. Traditional paste lube on a traditional lube groove. I like powder coated lead on anything cast. Wheel weights are goid lots of folks use them, the clip on style have some tin and antimony and arsenic in them, they will run a little harder than stick on wheel weights which are pure lead. Mix and match untill you get the results you like on alloy mix it's not a exact recipe.
But it's pretty flipping addictive.
